Take a look at the LFHeatMap project on gtihub and let me know what you think. Looks like they use a .plist file with simple lat, long, plus a measurement value.
Just FYI: there is a chance I can't make it to the event, I know I will be late, but no hard feelings if you find someone else to do anything I said I could help with...I am trying to get there just can't guarantee it yet. If I show up I will help where I can, GIS, iOS, Graphics, etc...
theHellyar,
I hope to see you there, understand if you cannot make it. The csv and shp files would be a great data sets to have if you can swing it. It would give us data source options for both web app and iOS/Android app possibilities.

We might be able to use the Google Maps SDK for iOS
https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/ios/
The heatmap javascript api is not supported with the SDK for iOS. But we may be able to use LFHeatMap
https://github.com/gpolak/LFHeatMap

Not sure if LFHeatMap is iOS 8 compatible or not.
